![]() ![]() The ports on a compensator are carefully angled and machined to force the pistol downward. The same principle carried over to competitive pistol shooting in the late 1970s. ![]() The 45 ACP round, while fired on full auto, would cause the muzzle to rise due to recoil and the Cutts Compensator helped keep the guns on target. One of the earliest compensator designs was the Cutts Compensator found on the Thompson submachine gun. Most compensators divert gasses and muzzle blast in a downward fashion to keep the firearm from rising during the firing sequence. ![]() A compensator’s primary role is to reduce “muzzle flip” or “muzzle climb.” While some manufacturers claim that they aid in recoil reduction, this is not entirely true, as most compensators operate on a different principle. WHAT IS A COMPENSATOR?Ī compensator is a type of muzzle device that works in a different way than a muzzle brake. Three gun shooters like muzzle brakes as they can allow for faster follow-up shots and a reduced recoil impulse. However, this is not always the case and they have been used successfully on rifles where a muzzle brake would have been uncommon even a decade ago.Ĭompetitive long range shooters tend to favor muzzle brakes, as the redirected gas and flash allow them to maintain a better sight picture. Originally, muzzle brakes were meant for use on calibers that generated a lot of felt recoil and they were commonly found on belted magnum rifle cartridges intended for big game or dangerous game hunting or bolt-action pistols chambered in 308 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield for use in handgun hunting. This is typically a result of the other parties feeling the shockwave generated as opposed to the sound itself. In some cases, the shooter may find the report of the weapon to be louder but most of the time it is the other shooters in close proximity that will find the shots fired to be louder. The drawback to most muzzle brakes is that they can change the direction of the sound of the fired round. This tends to prolong the life of the suppressor. This is not the same as a sound baffle, which decreases the sound signature of the firearm, but rather that the brake takes the brunt of the muzzle blast and fired gasses as opposed to the baffles in the suppressor itself. Some muzzle brakes, when used in conjunction with a suppressor, can act as a sacrificial blast baffle. Secondary benefits of muzzle brakes are byproducts of this as the reduction in felt recoil can aid the shooter with regard to accuracy and allow for faster follow up shots. Although construction varies, the primary identifying characteristic is a series of cuts that direct the burning gasses and muzzle blast of a fired round away from the shooter and most often toward the side or 180 degrees from the muzzle itself.Īs most of the felt recoil from a firearm originates at the muzzle, this effort is primarily done to reduce recoil. We’ll go over the nitty-gritty of muzzle brakes and compensators, but if you’re looking for a quick reference, take a look at this chart for the two major differences between the two: MUZZLE BRAKEĪ muzzle brake is a device which threads onto the end of a firearm’s barrel. Some come equipped with thread protectors and many come with a muzzle device.Īlthough the included muzzle device is typically a flash suppressor, some jurisdictions cling to antiquated and ill-informed laws that regard these devices as an “evil feature,” whereas a muzzle brake or compensator is perfectly legal. This has recently extended to bolt-action and lever-action rifles more commonly found in the hunting as opposed to the tactical arena. Most rifle barrels in the past several years have come threaded from the factory so the shooter can add a muzzle device such as a muzzle brake or a compensator. ![]()

Most professionals you consult will encourage you to add at least two 20A outlets to your kitchen. They also protect consumers, which is why you have to add them to your kitchen. Unlike GFCIs, AFCIs respond to electrical arcing. GFCIs are expensive but they are a legal requirement in kitchens because they save lives. Moisture is a conductor that can trigger a ground fault if it invades the circuitry of an appliance. This is more likely to occur in a kitchen because it exposes appliances, plugs, and outlets to water. If the current in an appliance flows through a new conductor, such as a person, the incoming current will differ from the outgoing current, triggering the GFCIs. Imbalances occur because of electrical leaks. They respond to imbalances in the outgoing and incoming current by tripping and cutting the power off. GFCIs protect consumers from electrical hazards. In other words, don’t be surprised if you find yourself placing a GFCI on an outlet that doesn’t need a GFCI. That first outlet might not fall within the 6-foot range mentioned above. ![]() In other words, you can use one GFCI to protect every single outlet in your kitchen.īut you have to place the GFCI on the outlet closest to the breaker that serves the kitchen. You are probably happy to learn that you only have to install GFCIs on the outlets that neighbor your countertops and sinks.īut what about the people that have several outlets within six feet of their sinks and countertops? Do they have to install a GFCI on every single one of them? NEC rules apply to new construction projects.īut if you want to update the wiring and remodel your kitchen, you must install GFCIs. You are better off doing so because the GFCIs will protect you and your family members from harm.īut if you don’t want to pay for new GFCIs, the NEC doesn’t expect old homes to install GFCIs. If you have an ancient home that was constructed before GFCIs became a requirement in the kitchen, you don’t have to install GFCI protection. You can ignore outlets that are not within 6 feet of a wet bar sink. But the NEC’s rules do not apply to receptacles that operate dishwashers.Īs you can see, this leaves a lot of wiggle room.

Since the character was created by an Austrian Jew and eventually voiced by a Jewish actress, Mae Questel, animation fans sometimes try to pinpoint various aspects that hint at Betty's Jewishness. The series was popular throughout the 1930s. From that point on, she was crowned "The Queen of the Animated Screen". īetty Boop was the star of the Talkartoons by 1932 and was given her own series that same year, beginning with Stopping the Show. Later, several different voice actresses performed the role, including Kate Wright, Bonnie Poe, Ann Rothschild (also known as Little Ann Little), and especially Mae Questel, who began voicing Betty Boop in Bimbo's Silly Scandals (1931), and continued with the role until 1939, returning nearly 50 years later in Disney's Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). Her floppy poodle ears became hoop earrings, and her black poodle nose became a girl's button-like nose.Ī colorful Betty Boop in Poor Cinderella, 1934īetty was first voiced by Margie Hines. By the release of Any Rags, Betty Boop was forever established as a human character. While much credit has been given to Grim Natwick for helping to transform Max Fleischer's creation, her transition into the cute cartoon girl was also in part due to the work of Berny Wolf, Otto Feuer, Seymour Kneitel, "Doc" Crandall, Willard Bowsky, and James "Shamus" Culhane. Within a year, Betty made the transition from an incidental human-canine breed to a completely human female character. In individual cartoons, she was called "Nancy Lee" or "Nan McGrew"-derived from the Helen Kane film Dangerous Nan McGrew (1930)-usually serving as a girlfriend to studio star Bimbo. Betty Boop appeared as a supporting character in ten cartoons as a flapper girl with more heart than brains. Clara Bow is often given credit as being the inspiration for Boop, though Fleischer told his artists that he wanted a caricature of singer Helen Kane, who performed in a style shared by many performers of the day–Kane was also the one who sued Fleischer over the signature "Boop Oop a Doop" line. Inspired by a popular performing style, but not by any one specific person, the character was originally created as an anthropomorphic French poodle. Although she was toned down in the mid-1930s as a result of the Hays Code to appear more demure, she became one of the world's best-known and most popular cartoon characters.īetty Boop made her first appearance in the cartoon Dizzy Dishes, released on August 9, 1930, the seventh installment in Fleischer's Talkartoon series. She has also been featured in comic strips and mass merchandising.Ī caricature of a Jazz Age flapper, Betty Boop was described in a 1934 court case as "combin in appearance the childish with the sophisticated-a large round baby face with big eyes and a nose like a button, framed in a somewhat careful coiffure, with a very small body of which perhaps the leading characteristic is the most self-confident little bust imaginable". She was featured in 90 theatrical cartoons between 19.
